CRJ 290 - Research Foundations in Criminal Justice

This is a course about doing criminological research. It provides a foundation for advanced research methods courses, capstone research in criminal justice, and engagement with criminal justice research in professional settings. We will focus on key steps in the research process, including identifying puzzles about the social world, selecting research methods to investigate these puzzles in a careful and systematic way, and dialoguing about research discoveries with criminologists and other publics. Additionally, we will read and analyze examples of real-life criminological research to become familiar with conventions of criminological writing and to develop critical understanding of the logic of the research process.  SOC 209 and CRJ 290 cannot both be taken for credit.
