Early College Certificates


The following non-degree certificates are designed for Early College students and can be completed during their last two years of high school. 

Students must complete a minimum of 12 credits through UMM.

Aquaculture - 14-17 credits


This certificate is designed for students who wish to explore careers in aquaculture of shellfish, finfish and algae.  With Maine’s aquaculture industry on the rise, skilled workers are in demand.  The courses combine hands-on experience with multiple aquaculture methods with a preparation in the science and business skills needed in the workforce. In addition, the curriculum facilitates the transition to UMM’s Bachelor of Arts in Biology or Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology degree programs for those students who decide to further their studies or seek higher credentials.

Becoming a Business Professional Certificate - 15 credits


This certificate program is designed to give students a set of introductory-level courses with a focus on the knowledge and activities related to the field of business.  The curriculum supports students interested in majoring in Business so they can be prepared with general knowledge and skills in the field and learn about possible career paths. 

All the courses are currently required in UMM’s baccalaureate program in Business & Entrepreneurial Studies.

Becoming a Teacher Certificate - 15 credits


This certificate is designed to give students a set of introductory-level courses with a focus on the knowledge and activities related to the field of education.  The curriculum supports students interested in majoring in Secondary or Elementary Education so they can be prepared with the knowledge and skills in the field and learn about possible career paths.

All the courses are currently required in UMM’s baccalaureate programs in Elementary and Secondary Education.

Career Exploration Certificate - 14-15 credits


This certificate program is designed to give non-degree students a set of introductory-level courses which will allow them to explor a variety of career options.  The curriculum supports students who haven’t decided on a field of interest or identified a prospective major.  Students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of courses and career connections.

Conservation Law Certificate - 15 credits


This certificate emphasizes a study of conservation law and how it relates to both law enforcement and outdoor recreational services. In addition, the curriculum facilities the transition to UMM’s Associate of Science in Conservation Law and Outdoor Management and/or UMM’s Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation and Tourism Management for those students who decide to further their studies or seek higher credentials. 

Creative Arts Certificate - 15 credits


The Creative Arts Certificate is for students interested in visual arts, creative writing, graphic novels, book illustration, and creative work combining text with illustrations. The skills learned in these beginning courses will prepare students for advanced courses in the UMM Creative Arts Program such as Book Arts, Intermediate Creative Writing, Book Design and Publishing, Drawing and Illustration, Careers in publishing, writing, illustration, graphic design, and book arts, are attainable in an ever-expanding industry with a degree from our program.

Exploring Psychology Certificate - 15 credits


This 15-credit certificate program is designed to give non-matriculated students a set of introductory-level courses which provide students with knowledge and activities related to the field of psychology. 

This curriculum supports students interested in majoring in Psychology to be prepared with general knowledge and skills in the field, as well as information about possible career paths. 

All of these courses are currently required of our Psychology & Community Studies majors.

Inclusive Early Childhood Education - 15 credits


This certificate will facilitate the development of knowledge and skills related to working with young children who have special needs. Coursework emphasizes theoretical and practical exploration of typical and atypical child development, as well as methods for supporting children and families through the stags of child development. Strategies for professional communication with coworkers and families are also a focus. 

These courses all count toward UMM’s Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Inclusive Early Childhood Education. 

Introduction to College Studies Certificate - 15-16 credits


This certificate program is designed to give students a set of introductory-level college courses.  The curriculum supports students interested in attending college and prepares them with general knowledge and skills infused in the liberal arts. 

The courses required are common to general education curricula around the country and would be likely to transfer to meet general education requirements at any higher education institution.

Introduction to Health Professions Certificate - 18-19 credits


This certificate is designed to give non-degree students a set of introductory-level college courses that will be useful to students majoring in the health professions.

The curriculum supports students interested in attending college and prepares them with the first-year curriculum in several different health profession fields, including nursing, pre-professional, etc. 

All these courses are currently required of students completing an Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in Allied Health.

Introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Certificate - 15 credits


This certificate program is designed to give non-degree students a set of introductory-level college STEM courses.  The curriculum supports students interested in attending college and prepares them with the first-year curriculum in several different STEM fields.

All courses are currently required in UMM’s baccalaureate programs in Biology and Marine Biology. 

Students interested in engineering or physical science should take the PHY 121/PHY 122 sequence, as the PHY 111/PHY 112 sequence may not necessarily meet program requirements in an engineering or physical science program.

Outdoor Leadership - 15 credits


This five-course, 15-credit certificate program in Outdoor Leadership is designed to give students a set of introductory level credits with a focus on providing students with knowledge and activities related to the field of outdoor recreation and leadership. This curriculum supports students interested in majoring in Recreation and Tourism Management, or minoring in Outdoor Recreation or Wilderness Therapy, to be prepared with general knowledge and skills about the field as well as potential career paths. All of these courses are currently required of our Recreation and Tourism Management majors and support the Outdoor Recreation and Wilderness Therapy minors.

Supporting Diverse Learners - 13 credits


This certificate will facilitate the development of:  an understanding of K-12 schools as organizational systems; foundational skills related to working in a K-12 school environment; and awareness of the multiple dimensions of diversity represented in K-12 student populations. Emphasis will be placed upon the formation and practical application of professional skills and dispositions expected of individuals working in a K-12 school environment. 

These courses all count toward UMM’s Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Special Education. Additionally, SED 201 applies to all Maine teaching endorsements.
