This program is designed to prepare students for employment in occupations where specific knowledge of financial economics will be useful in entry-level positions and in enhancing subsequent opportunities for advancement. The program also provides a strong undergraduate background for graduate professional degrees in business, economics, and law. This approach incorporates the fundamentals of economic theory in the areas of macroeconomics and monetary economics along with the applied analytical tools of finance and econometrics.

Program Requirements:

1. Required Economics (ECO) courses:

ECO 120 - Principles of Microeconomics Credits: 3
ECO 121 - Principles of Macroeconomics Credits: 3
ECO 321 - Intermediate Macroeconomics Credits: 3
ECO 339 - International Finance Credits: 3
ECO 353 - Money and Banking Credits: 3
ECO 420 - Intermediate Microeconomic Theory with Calculus Credits: 3
ECO 485 - Introduction to Economic Statistics and Econometrics Credits: 3 - 4
One additional 300- or 400-level ECO course

Note:

ECO 420 and ECO 421 should be taken early in the student’s program of study. A minimum grade of C- is required in both ECO 420 and ECO 421.

Students may take REP 371 or REP 471 as the additional economics course

4. Statistics requirement:

One of the following statistics courses:

MAT 215 - Introduction to Statistics for Business and Economics Credits: 3
MAT 232 - Principles of Statistical Inference Credits: 3
MAT 434 - Introduction to Statistics Credits: 4

5. Professional Electives:

Students are required to work with their advisor to select 18 credit hours of Professional Electives. Courses selected to fulfill this requirement must be approved by the faculty advisor and must benefit the student’s career or graduate school plans. With this block of courses, students are encouraged to explore minors in other academic areas, take foreign languages, or study in another country or another university. electives recommended for this block of courses includes, for example, BUA 201, Principles of Financial Accounting, more business courses as well as one or more computer courses.

6. A Minimum grade-point average of 2.0 is required in all required courses.

Residence requirement:

Financial Economics majors must complete a minimum of 12 of the required credits in economics and 6 of the required credits in business at the University of Maine.
