SFR 216 - Wood Identification Provides basic knowledge and hands-on skills in identifying commercial wood species commonly grown in North America. The gross and minute anatomical features of hardwood and softwood species will be observed by means of a hand lens and microscope. The keys to identification for hardwood and softwood species in terms of gross and minute features will be introduced. The effects of the anatomical features on the physical, mechanical and machining properties of different wood species will be discussed. The applications of the commercial wood species will be introduced.
