President’s Message

Welcome to the University of Maine!
UMaine President Robert Kennedy.

With a remarkable tradition of nearly 150 years and a broad mission of teaching, research, and service, UMaine is a unique resource for the people of Maine and the nation.  As Maine’s land-grant university and flagship campus, UMaine provides our state’s broadest array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs while conducting scholarly research and engaging Maine’s residents in ways that add meaning and value to their lives.  We are proud to serve in this vital role, and we are pleased to have you join our community of scholars.

Fundamentally, UMaine is a place where teaching and learning takes place, in the classroom and beyond.  We have a talented faculty, made up of some of the world’s foremost scholars in various fields across our entire academic program.  Our professors challenge our students through rigorous, stimulating engagement that provides the foundation for a lifetime of learning and leadership.  You will find UMaine faculty members to be accessible and committed to your success.  That close connection is, in fact, UMaine’s greatest core strength.

As a comprehensive university, UMaine provides a student experience that extends beyond the classroom and laboratory.  Learning and growth continue for our students in other parts of university life, and this is especially true for those who take full advantage of the vast array of opportunities available on campus and beyond.  Our most successful students are those who participate fully in the university experience, finding ways to be meaningful contributors to our community.  I encourage you to seek those opportunities because they will certainly enrich your student experience.

This catalog provides important information and background, critical for your successful exploration of the learning options that will lead to a positive achievement of your personal and academic goals.  Working in conjunction with your advisor, you can use this guide to understand your degree requirements, those of your major and the optimal pathways to the outcome you desire.  If you have questions, your advisor, your professors and your department chair are all ready and eager to help.

I sincerely hope you find your University of Maine student experience to be successful and rewarding.

With best regards,

Paul W. Ferguson
President
