Bachelor of Science - Education

OVERVIEW OF DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum number of credits required to graduate: 120

Minimum Cumulative GPA required to graduate: 2.0

Required Course for fulfilling Capstone Experience and Service Learning Experience in Major: EDU 490 or SED 490(Elementary  and Secondary), SED 490 (Special Education concentration) or SED 329 (Inclusive Early Childhood Education concentration) 

Required Course for fulfilling Writing Intensive Course in Major: EDU 216

Residency requirement: Must complete at least 30 credits through UMM, at least 12 of which must be in their major and 9 of these 12 must be upper level (300 level or above). 

The Education major prepares students for a teaching career in one of four concentrations: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, or Inclusive Early Childhood Education. Students complete the University Core Requirements; Major Requirements of the program; and Concentration Requirements.

Education Major Requirements

Elementary Concentration

Requirements: 

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (passed by the start of the semester prior to intended student teaching)
  • Praxis Elementary Education; Multiple Subjects (passed by the start of the semester prior to intended student teaching)
  • 6 credits in Math, English and Language Arts, Science, Social Studies (from either the general core classes or electives) 
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible to student teach.

Curriculum Requirements: 

Content Area Requirements: 

Choose one of the following minors (the total number of credits from the General Education Core, Minor, and Elective should total a minimum of 24 credits).

Available Minors: 

Secondary Concentration

Requirements: 

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (passed by the start of the semester prior to intended student teaching)
  • Praxis Content Area Exam (passed by the start of the semester prior to intended student teaching)
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible to student teach.
