OVERVIEW OF DEGREE REQUIREMENTS - Economics B. A. and B. S.

Minimum number of credits required to graduate: 120

Minimum Cumulative GPA required to graduate: 2.0

Minimum Grade requirements for courses to count toward major: A “C-” or better is required in ECO 120, ECO 121, ECO 350 (or ECO 420), and ECO 321.

Other GPA requirements to graduate: Economics (ECO) coursework must be completed with a 2.0 cumulative average.

Required Course(s) for fulfilling Capstone Experience: ECO 475 or ECO 489

Programs in the School of Economics emphasize the application of economic reasoning to public policy development and to private decision-making. The curriculum in economics includes courses that focus on the understanding of both American economic institutions and international economic institutions. The faculty of the School of Economics brings a broad set of experiences and perspectives that provide students with diverse learning opportunities. At the undergraduate level, the program strives to develop in students the analytic skills that will prepare them to succeed in a variety of career or advanced educational settings.

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is a program that trains students in economic analysis and the functioning of economic institutions. The program emphasizes public economic policy, both domestic and international. The major offers students valuable preparation for a variety of career paths. Students may design their programs of study:

  1. for immediate entry upon graduation into business, government, or other employment;

  2. for graduate education leading to a business administration or law degree;

  3. for graduate work in economics or related disciplines.

Students are required to work with their advisors on selecting professional electives. Students are also encouraged to discuss career or graduate school preparation with their advisor. The Bachelor of Science curriculum is designed to place a greater emphasis on analytical and mathematical techniques.

BA Requirements:


 Economics majors must complete a minimum of 18 economics (ECO) credits at the University of Maine.  In additions, students must complete the following:

2. Twenty-one (21) additional credit hours in ECO courses.


A minimum of nine (9) credits must be at the 400 level. ECO 480, Introduction to Mathematical Economics and ECO 485, Introduction to Economic Statistics and Econometrics, are strongly recommended for students considering graduate study in economics. 

Students may choose to focus in one of the following concentration areas:
• Agribusiness Administration
• Equine Business Management
• International Economics
• Pre-law
• Recreation Business Management
• Resource and Environmental Economics and Policy
• Renewable Energy

Students are required to work with their advisor to select 27 credit hours of Professional Electives.  Courses selected to fulfill this requirement must be approved by the faculty advisor and must benefit the student’s career or graduate school plans.  With this block of courses, students are encouraged to explore minors in other academic areas, take foreign languages, or study in another country or another university.  Electives recommended for this block of courses includes, for example: BUA 201, Principles of Financial Accounting, more business courses as well as one or more computer courses.

(Listed below is the sequence for economics courses. Students meet with their Faculty Advisor to fill in remaining schedule with General Education courses, free and professional electives and other requirements.)

Third Year


Two or three upper level economics courses

Fourth Year


Two or three upper level philosophy courses, including ECO 489 Senior Seminar

BS Requirements:


Economics majors must complete a minumum of 18 economics (ECO) credits at the Unviversity of Maine.  In addition, students must complete the following:

1. Economics Core Courses


2. Twenty-seven (27) additional credit hours of ECO courses, or Professional Electives


Students are required to work with their advisor to select 27 credit hours of Professional Electives or Concentration courses.  A minimum of 21 credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.  Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all courses satisfying professional elective or concentration courses.  These courses selected to fulfill this requirement must be approved by the faculty advisor and must benefit the student’s career or graduate school plans.

Students may choose to focus in one of the following concentration areas:

  • Agribusiness Administration
  • Equine Business Management
  • International Economics
  • Pre-law
  • Recreation Business Management
  • Resource and Environmental Economics and Policy
  • Renewable Energy

3. Mathematics Requirement


Student must complete either MAT 126 or (ECO 280 and MAT 115).

5. Science Requirement


Students are required to take two laboratory based sciences as well as an applied science for a total of eleven (11) credit hours in sciences.
