SED 201 - Dimensions of Exceptionality in the Classroom The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the characteristics and needs of K-12 students with exceptionalities. Students in this survey course will learn about a range of topics including the history of special education; the provisions of IDEA; relevant legal issues in special education; program planning and placement with an emphasis on inclusive practices; transitioning students to adulthood; classroom accommodations and modifications; and instruction of students with exceptionalities. Students will learn the characteristics of various disabilities, and how they affect individuals and their families. Factors that put students at risk, cultural and linguistic diversity, and giftedness are also explored.
Prerequisites: EDU 112 or PSY 110, or permission of instructor.
