SFR 106 - Forest Land Navigation and Outdoor Preparedness


A hands on, in the field introduction to the basics of forest land navigation and outdoor preparedness for students majoring in natural resources.  Natural resource professionals often work alone or in small teams in remote locations and off trail.  Preparation and planning are the keys to safe, successful fieldwork and include proper dress and equipment both for planned tasks and for whatever emergencies may come up. The course stresses the use of various types of maps, charts, and imagery commonly used by natural resource professionals and how to use both hardcopy and digital maps, charts and images in conjunction with compasses and basic GPS units to plan, conduct, and record the results of field sessions.  Interpreting topographic maps and determining slope with handheld devices is also included.  This course does not cover wilderness first aid.

Prerequisites: SFR 101 or Permission
